While working in the garden today, I came upon a very strange looking insect enjoying my salvia. I did manage to take a picture, can only guess that it was about 3" long. Never saw anything like it before and was hoping you knew what it was!

The insect is a dragonfly. Oregon hosts a number of different species, differentiated by their body color and wing patterns. They are especially numerous if you live near a pond or stream.
Dragonflies are predators which help limit other small flying insects while both are flying. This one probably paused on your salvia for a sip of nectar.
