Drowned plants #462678

Asked June 15, 2018, 4:20 PM EDT

I have a swale in between my house and the neighbor. It is flanked by 2 crepe myrtle trees that are 2 stories high. Because of the trees, it is difficult to get anything to grow permanently. A neighbor gave me some ferns, so I decided to plant some and see how it went. They were doing fine until the multiple bouts of heavy rain. Do you have any suggestions? Do you think they can be saved?

Expert Response

These look like ostrich ferns, a wonderful native fern which should be very happy in your swale eventually.  The browning looks like a reaction to being transplanted.  Give them a year, and they should do well for you.  They love moisture and should love a swale.
