Silver Maple on the verge of life span #460637

Asked June 08, 2018, 8:53 AM EDT

Hello, I have a silver maple that is at least 60+ years old which can be seen in the attached pictures. It's overall diameter is approximately 44". We have plans to put up a shed next to the tree, our original plan was to save it due to it's age. However, I noticed this spring that it is not as full at the top as it has been in the past two years since we bought the property. Also, it is not as full as other younger maples on the property I would like to save it, but if it is on the verge of death I would rather take it out now with no shed than have to try and do it with the structure in the area. Do you think it is dying? Please let me know as soon as you can, as there are tentative plans to take this tree down this weekend (6/10 or 6/12). Thanks in advance! Tom Ostrowski

Expert Response

We can't evaluate the tree's health by viewing the photos. For an informed answer to your question we suggest asking a forester or certified arborist to assess the tree's health onsite and recommend a course of action.

Silver maples often live for 100 years or more. This spring many Minnesota silver maple trees bore immense crops of seeds. This happens occasionally and when it does, leaves sometimes do not develop until mid-summer or later. This might account for the condition of the tree shown in the photos.
