Hello,
This plant is appearing this year in profusion. Can you identify it for me?
Thanks,

County Pennsylvania

Expert Response

Hi,
That is either ladysthumb or Pennsylvania smartweed. They are very similar, and I cannot see the distinguishing characteristic (hairy ochrea, the papery sheath around the base of the leaf and the stem; PA smartweed lacks hairs).
Both can be weedy in gardens. Here is a fact sheet from Virginia Tech: https://oak.ppws.vt.edu/~flessner/weedguide/polpy.htm

Best regards,
