fungus at bottom of Maple #458806

Asked June 01, 2018, 5:23 PM EDT

Hello, we have this fungus at the bottom of the Maple that is right by the street. It is on the one next to it too but not as much. Is there anything I can do to help the tree? Is it toxic for the tree? Thank you

Expert Response

This is a type of wood decay fungus. It is not a good sign for the tree. It is an indicator that there are dead areas.
You should contact an arborist and consider options for removal. You can find a certified arborist using the following website. http://www.treesaregood.org/

When these decay fungi are on the trunk or major branches they should be checked out by a certified arborist for the extent of the decay and the structural integrity of the tree. Extensive decay could be cause for tree removal because of the risk of the tree falling over and causing property damage.
