Apple tree with split bark and holes #458575

Asked May 31, 2018, 10:15 PM EDT

we have a Golden Sentinal Apple tree which is about 2 years old. We noticed the bark is split and there are several small holes in the lower trunk. What can we do to heal this tree?  The leaves look healthy and it has a LOT of fruit on it.

Expert Response

You may have apple flatheaded borers in your apple tree. Sunscalding on the tree can cause peeling bark, especially on the south side of the tree. One way to avoid this is to paint the trunk of the tree with whitewash or while house paint.

Once the bark is split, borers have access to the cambian layer to penetrate and feed. The following article from the Pacific Northwest Handbook from the Extension Service offers some advice about treatment options. .

Management-chemical control: HOME USE

  • azadirachtin (neem oil)-Some formulations are OMRI-listed for organic use.
  • imidacloprid-Soil drenches may have residual activity in woody plants lasting for 12 or more months. If short-term management is the goal, consider other approaches.
  • pyrethrins-Some formulations are OMRI-listed for organic use.

Also, it appears you have suckers growing up from the base of the tree. Remove them as they sap energy from the tree. Keep after the suckers as they may continue to grow.
