Pine tree Identification. #457323

Asked May 27, 2018, 4:52 PM EDT

Can you please identify this tree for me? My wife believes it is a white pine, but I am sure it is not. I have grown a white pine before, and I believe it was quite different. Please note, the apartment complex where I live planted this. It did not grow here by itself. The needles grow in pairs, and the cones whan opened are 2.5" to 3" across (I could not include the photosd due to the site limitations).

Hello,

This looks like an Austrian pine.  White pines have needles in bundles of 5.

Compare your tree to these pictures and see if it matches.

The other 2 needle  pines are: jack pine, can be compared to what you have- http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/trees/plants/jack_pine.htm

Scot’s pine- http://dendro.cnre.vt.edu/dendrology/syllabus/factsheet.cfm?ID=112

Jack pine doesn’t have long enough needles to match yours. Scot’s pine doesn’t have flowers that look like your picture. Please write back if you have more questions. Thanks for using our service.
