Japanese maple tree - peeling bark #456460

Asked May 23, 2018, 11:06 PM EDT

Hello, Our Japanese maple tree’s bark is peeling but otherwise seems healthy with leaves coming in nicely. My husband noticed ants crawling near the site where the bark was peeled off yesterday but I did not see the ants today. I have read that this could be caused by a harsh winter, trauma to the tree (we did have new siding put on our house this winter so could have been hit potentially) or perhaps a squirrel or other animal...so not sure of the cause but wondering what I should do. Cover the bark? Use an insecticide? I have attached 2 pictures as well. Thanks for your help! Melissa

Expert Response

Maple tree bark is a favorite food for rabbits during winter. As long as the damage has not girdled/circles the tree it may recover. It is Important to protect the tree from winter damage. I doubt the ants are a part of the problem. See: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/wildlife/rabbits-and-trees-and-shrubs/
