Maple seedling identification #453709

Asked May 13, 2018, 5:49 PM EDT

Is there an easy way to distinguish between a Crimson King maple seedling and other varieties of maple?

Tompkins County New York

Expert Response

Thanks for your question.  The major discriminate is the existence of the dark red color in the first 'true leaves,' as opposed to the seed leaves, which are green and more round than the true leaves.  You can compare them in the photos I've attached. In order, Crimson king maple, sugar maple and big leaf maple.  Hope this is helpful.

Thanks so much Kristena. Funny that very few CK germinated while a plethora of the others did.
