Perennials #453566

Hello
I have two questions
1. What would be the best perennial to plant under spruce trees? The trees have been trimmed up about 3-4 feets. We have deer and rabbits in the area so i would need a plant that they would not like to eat. I had planted some hosta and the deer and rabbits enjoyed them.....
2. The soil in one of my garden beds that I plant annuals is very hard what could I add to it to light up the soil
Thank you so much

Here is a link to more information, however, if animals are hungry they will eat most anything.

The best way to amend hard soil is to work in several inches of compost.
