Poisonous to Livestock #452305

Are Black Eyed Susan Vines (Thunbergia alata) poisonous to cattle or chickens?

Pennington County Minnesota

Expert Response

Where do you have the black eyed susan vine? are you growing it near a pasture? (This is a garden plant, and non-native)

As far as I can find, Thunbergia is a safe plant, however, I wouldn't recommend planting any garden plants near livestock pastures/paddocks just to be on the safe side.

I was hoping to grow the vine up the side of my chicken coop/run (possibly out of a pot), which the cows would have access to in their pasture.

I would advise against it.  If it is tasty, the cows will eat it and it will never grow like you want it.

Is there another attractive looking vine that would be suitable for that purpose?

Hi,

I'm a Master Gardener and I've been assigned this question. The original thread was with someone at the Extension Farm Information Line.

You may have to make concessions regarding attractiveness. You could try vegetables like cucumbers or squash, or grapes or hops. You might try honeysuckle.
