Pruning hydrangeas #450201
Asked April 28, 2018, 10:04 AM EDT
I have several hydrangea bushes as well as a small hydrangea tree. I left the blooms on in the fall for winter interest. When can I prune these and how far is it wise to prune back the branches?
Hennepin County Minnesota
You can shape them now. Prune just above a bump where a leaf will sprout. Do not cut the larger main branches back too much as they provide the backbone to keep the blooms up. The new thin branches will weep and those thick branches hold them up. Trim your plants back to just a foot or so shorter than you want the mature plant to be.
Thank you so much! That is exactly what I needed to know!
