barbarries - invansive? #449981

Asked April 27, 2018, 9:47 AM EDT

Hi there . Are all barberries invasive? I have Japanese and others. Came with the house.

New Castle County Delaware

Expert Response

Berberis thunbergii (Japanese Barberry) and Berberis vulgaris (European Barberry) are both invasive shrubs with the Japanese barberry being the worst on native habitats. They are non-native to Delaware (and anywhere else in the U.S.). Both are listed on Delaware’s Invasive Plant List.

The only native barberry is Berberis candensis (American barberry) which is often confused with the Japanese barberry.

More recently, some sterile cultivars of Japanese barberry have been introduced such as the hybrid Orange Rocket and Sunjoy series. They are not supposed to set seed.  In some states, however, Sunjoy is still restricted.
