This is Holly tree, bark damage. The top of the tree was dead within a few weeks. I am now seeing damage on the cedar next to it. What is this insect that caused this bark damage? What is the treatment to prevent spread and infestation. Thank you.

Expert Response
The damage on the bark is old damage from sapsucker feeding. Sapsuckers are a type of woodpecker that drill into the tree to feed on sap and the insects entrapped by the sap. You can read more about them -- and what to do to prevent damage -- on the following page. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/woodpeckers-and-sapsuckers.
In addition, hollies suffered a lot of winter damage this year -- resulting in scorched-looking, dead leaves. Wait until the weather warms up this spring and see where new growth develops on your plant. Then prune out any dead branches. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/winter-damage-trees-and-shrubs
