Young Norway Spruce - Winter Damage? #444481

Asked March 21, 2018, 8:06 PM EDT

We planted these three Norway Spruce last year (May). They were looking great up until a few weeks ago when we noticed some damage that must have occurred over winter. The photo's are taken from the South side of the trees. They are well away from any road salt and have brown mulch around them. We're not sure if this is something to be concerned about. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated!

The trees are exhibiting the effects of winter burn.  Newly planted trees are more likely to be affected than those that are well established.  The following document discusses winter burn and what to do about it.  Especially note the information in paragraph six.
