Maple tree is dripping a LOT! #443949

Asked March 18, 2018, 12:14 PM EDT

Should I be concerned about my maple tree? It is "raining" sap! It is a well established tree about 18-24" in diameter. We have not done any maintenance since we moved in 3 years ago. Im not sure what species it is. Red, orange and yellow autumn foliage, held its leaves well into November

Hello and thank you for contacting AaE for help.

This is the time of the year when the sap starts running in Maples due to the warmer temperatures; so it may be normal.  Sap can ooze or drip from holes in the tree's bark made by birds or from broken branches or cracks in the bark. However, if there is a large split in the bark where sap is oozing out, then you may want to have it checked out for disease.  If after examining it carefully and determining that there are no large cracks where sap is oozing out, I'd chalk it up to normal sap running.

As for the species of maple, if the tree's leaves are bigger than a man's hands, I might guess it is a Norway maple.  They can keep their leaves pretty late in the fall.

I hope this helps.
