tick elimination #443080

Asked March 10, 2018, 5:06 PM EST

I would like to buy a piece of property ion the Rogue River in Grants Pass but am hesitant to do so because it has a tick problem.. I walked it last spring and found several ticks on me and my dog. Can the property be managed to control and hopefully eliminate the ticks. Will it take a communal effort to be successful? Are there companies that will do the spraying for me?

Thank you for your question about tick control. As the following Extension article indicates, chemical controls are largely unsuccessful, because they are simply 'comfortable' in the extant local environment. You can read about this here:  https://hortnews.extension.iastate.edu/2010/6-9/ticks.html

One source suggests that "If installed strategically, some plants may ward off ticks. Plants include: garlic, sage, mint, rosemary, pyrethrum, American beautyberry, Mexican marigolds, rose geranium and citronella."  You can read the rest of the article here:  http://news.aces.edu/blog/2016/06/27/controlling-ticks/

I hope this information will assist you in making your decision.  Good luck!
