Catelpa trunk splits #441380

Asked February 23, 2018, 12:30 PM EST

Can you please answer a question that is an ongoing disagreement between my husband and I? The tree is about 6 yrs old and every winter the northern bark splits about two inches deep. This year the southern bark has split as well. It is a lovely tree and flowers and produces pods each year but my husband thinks it is strutually unsound, the bark closes up each summer, but is it safe if the only continuous trunk is on either side of the split and virtually none in the middle?

Expert Response

Bark splits can result from sudden and drastic changes in winter temperatures.

Unfortunately, it is hard for us to tell from a picture whether the tree is structurally sound. We recommend contacting an arborist to come out and look at your tree.  Here are two websites where you can find an arborist: American Society of Consulting Arborists: http://www.asca-consultants.org/ and International Society of Arboriculture: http://www.isa-arbor.com/
