Have cocoons everywhere in house, exterminator could not help us. #441311

Asked February 22, 2018, 3:51 PM EST

Could you please help me identify this pest? I sent pictures before, no help from reputable exterminator. I did stain on my microscope one of the recent cocoons and there was a visible image of a worm inside under 40 X magnification. I could not get a picture of the stained cocoon under microscope.

Expert Response

This is probably a clothes moth cocoon.  For a more positive identification, send us a photo of the larvae in cocoon.  You could also put some cocoon in a jar (with air holes in the lid) and let them match into moths.  Then send us photos of the moths.

Read through our clothes moths page and look at the photo: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/clothes-moths

:Locate the wool rugs, wall hangings or other woolens where the moths are propagating. A vacuum is your best friend.  Vacuum up everywhere very thoroughly. Wool rugs will harbor clothes moths underneath for about 1 foot.  Lift and vacuum.  Discard the bag contents or the bag.
