Red oak tree produced no acorns last 2 years #439328

Asked February 01, 2018, 3:12 AM EST

Do you know of any reasons why the red oak trees in my yard have not produced any acorns in the last 2 years? Other than this, the trees appear to be healthy. I was wondering if there is something going on with the species in Maryland. Thanks!

Expert Response

It's not unusual for oaks to bear acorns in cycles or depending upon weather conditions. Production fluctuates a great deal year to year.

We have not gotten any reports that this is a particular problem at the moment. Keep an eye on your oaks if you are concerned about them, and watch for other signs such as dieback, early leaf drop, or smaller-than-normal leaf size.
