Rodents eating fruit tree roots in Oregon's desert region #439161

Asked January 29, 2018, 9:48 PM EST

Rodents are eating the roots of my fruit trees. I live in the high desert outside of Bend. It appears that they are nibbling on the bark also. I do not want to use poison as we have chickens, dog and small children. What can I do?

Expert Response

Hello there,

I am sorry to hear of your challenges! There are a few options you might try aside from using poison. They include:
1. Lethal trapping
2. Live trapping
3. Exclusion fencing
4. Repellants
5. Habitat manipulation

Although this publication focuses on forest trees, the processes outlined will apply to fruit trees as well. https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/em9063

I also recommend this publication on management of meadow voles and pocket gophers https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/pnw627

If you aren't having any luck, please call the Deschutes County Extension office and ask for the Master Gardeners. (541) 548-6088
