White Pine Disease #434261

Asked November 10, 2017, 4:10 PM EST

We have this beautiful white pine at our cabin which is dripping sap, and has little holes all around the trunk area (see photos). We are worried this is a pine beetle, or a borer affecting this tree. We also have seen holes like these now on a few of our oak trees there as well. Any information as to what we can do to save the trees, or should we just remove them? Thank you

Expert Response

If the evenly spaced holes in main stem of your white pine are approximately ¼ inch and arranged in a linear or columnar pattern then the damage may be caused by Yellow bellied sapsucker ( Sphyrapicus varisus).  https://www.na.fs.fed.us/spfo/pubs/howtos/ht_sap/sap.htm
