dying evergreens #433753

Asked November 05, 2017, 7:47 AM EST

Our yard is full of long needle and short needle evergreens that have been loosing their needles for years now. We have cut some down. They look horrible but my husband doesn't want them gone. There are no visible bugs or diseases. I've heard maybe climate change is the issue. One year I tried to help the trees by feeding the trees with the soil stakes. To me it seemed they got worse. I have noticed that other yards in the neighborhood with spruce and such have similar issues. Any ideas? We live in Coon Rapids.

Expert Response

I'm sorry, you've not given me enough information to make even a guess. There are many species of evergreens, including pines, fir and spruce. Each has its own disease and pest issues. So you can see that "losing needles" and "looking horrible" does not give me a lot to go on.

Here is a good link to start from, a diagnostic page:

You might also want to contact a certified arborist since you have several trees at risk:

If you decide to write back, please send us sharp photos of the trees in question, including close-ups of branches and needles.
