Bird pecked tomatoes #430792

Asked October 10, 2017, 5:22 PM EDT

Is is safe to eat bird pecked tomatoes? What are the risks? What pathogens are found on animal nibbled garden goodies?

Jefferson County Kentucky

Expert Response

Wild animals can carry bacteria and other pathogens in their mouths, beaks and claws. Once the vegetable's skin has been broken, decay starts to set in as well. Vegetables and fruit that have been compromised by animal feeding should be discarded. Food safety starts at harvest and we want you and your family to be safe!

"When in doubt, throw it out."
