Asked September 29, 2017, 10:51 AM EDT

This pine tree has been very healthy. In the last 2 days it has started to yellow rapidly. What is wrong and how can I save it?

Expert Response

Hello there, You might be interested to know that this looks like a Douglas-fir, not a pine tree. Our Oregon conifer trees drop their old needles every fall. Depending on the year's heat and water availability, they may just drop a few or they may drop many. It is probable that your site is a little hotter and drier than this tree would prefer so it is showing excessive flagging, as we call it. Make sure your tree is getting regular deep watering (once or twice a month long period drip, not just lawn irrigation). If you have further questions, I encourage you to contact our Deschutes County extension office directly. Regards, Nicole
