Help me identify problem on Sweet bay Magnolia leaves #429025

Asked September 28, 2017, 9:02 AM EDT

Hi. Attached is the picture I took from Sweet bay magnolia leaves. The leaves started turning this yellowing blotchy color beginning of August and now almost 80% of the tree leaves have this coloration. We planted this tree in late spring this year, and unfortunately in our heavy clay soil. Other Sweet bay trees planted in the area still maintain their green leaves color. Could you help me diagnose what's the problem with this tree and if there are suggestion to rectify or make it better. I appreciate your response.

We think that this is simply an establishment issue. The first year to 18 mos. in the ground are stressful for new plants. We don't see any signs of disease or pest damage.
Keep your new plants watered if it doesn't rain, right up until the ground freezes for the winter. Give it a 2-3 inch layer of mulch, but pull it away from any contact with the trunk.
It should flush out with new green leaves next spring.
