River Birch dropping leaves #427822

Asked September 20, 2017, 2:21 PM EDT

My recently planted river birch had been doing quite nicely, but in the last week or so, dark spots have shown up on the leaves. Now the leaves are turning yellow and brown and dropping. I want the tree to be healthy going into the winter - is there anything I can do?

Expert Response

This is not an uncommon behavior for river birch trees in the Maryland area.
In dry years, these trees shed interior leaves in reaction to drought. In wetter years, like this one, leaf spot diseases are common and can cause early defoliation.
Neither of these defoliations are cause for concern though, and should not result in any harm to this great native tree.
