Black spots on leaves of tree #427509

Our maple (or is it an oak) tree seems to be suffering. The leaves are covered with big black spots. Can you please tell me what this is? I'm also wondering if there's a solution.

It is a maple and it is tar spot, a common fungal infection on maples. Tar spot is usually only a cosmetic problem and rarely requires treatment:
