Is this leaf scorch? #426540

Asked September 13, 2017, 9:51 AM EDT

A gentleman brought a leaf sample into our Extension office. He would like to know what is going on and how he can fix the problem. I think that it is leaf scorch. He said it started on his maple tree and has moved on to his lilac bush that is located near the maple. Please advise.

Thank you!

You are correct. This does appear to be a classic instance of leaf scorch. Not unusual considering the droughty conditions we've had for awhile. The two links below will be good information for your client. The one from the Missouri Botanical Garden gives some good actions to take to prevent leaf scorch in the future. Since it normally appears in late summer, there is rarely any damage to the tree.  Any leaf will scorch when it's hot enough and dry enough --even lilac!
