flowering cherry tree #425105

Asked September 04, 2017, 4:03 PM EDT

I planted a flowering cherry tree in the spring this year. The tree was doing really well, grew about a foot. Now it's leaves are turn yellow and falling off. We have had lots of rain and when it's not raining. I have been watering twice a week. What is wrong with my tree?

Expert Response

No matter how vigilant we are and how much love we give newly planted trees, it's just plain stressful on them. With the hot temperatures and the high humidity we were having this summer, slightly premature yellowing and leaf drop can be considered normal for a tree. Especially flowering ornamental trees. While it is more than likely just stress related, it is also impossible for me to say that there isn't anything else going on without seeing it. Do the leaves have any spots on them? This could possibly indicate a fungal issue. Is there damage to the trunk anywhere?  This would cause damage to the food supply hence causing leaf drop.
