What is volunteer weed #423238

Asked August 24, 2017, 4:43 PM EDT

Hello, I allowed multiple volunteers to grow this year to a height of 4 to 7 feet tall, but now am beginning to worry as the flowers begin to open that maybe I should not allow more seeds in the perennial bed. Last year's flowers of my only one of these plants were continued to be visited by bees after most other flowers in the bed were spent. Please advise. Thanks,

Baltimore County Maryland

Expert Response

This is a nice native wildflower known as common boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum).

It's beneficial to butterflies, birds and other insects.  Very adaptable.  One of it's best characteristics is that it blooms when few other flowers are blooming.  Enjoy.

Very glad to learn that, Thanks!
