Bark peeling off Maple Tree #422812

Asked August 22, 2017, 2:53 PM EDT

I have 3 maple trees about 30 feet from our lake. trees appear very healthy, except the center tree has its bark peeling. the canopy branches are fine, leaves appear good. someone suggested it is growing too fast and too much water. we have a sprinkler system that waters every other day

Expert Response

Hi,

I can't tell what kind of maple this is, but some (like the silver maple) shed bark as they grow.

If the peeling is on the south side only, it might be sunscald: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/trees-shrubs/winter-injury-on-trees/

If the tree is otherwise healthy, I wouldn't be too concerned. I don't think it's growing too fast.
