I've finally gotten some ripe plums from one of our American plum trees. They had some blackened small holes in the flesh so i cut one open and found black specs and tiny white worm/ larva pests. Any idea what it is and if i can do anything yet this year for my other plum trees which have very small green plums still? And to avoid this next year? I'd like to avoid harsh chemicals if possible. See attached pictures. Thank you.

The black specs are insect poop. Your fruit is infested with Plum Curculio http://www.extension.umn.edu/Garden/yard-garden/fruit/integrated-pest-management-for-home-stone-frui...
It also is possible that the larvae you see is drosophilia, a new insect pest that has moved into Minnesota the past few years. It also is a real pest on raspberries. Here is information on that one: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/insects/find/spotted-wing-drosophila-in-home-gardens/
Hmmm, how could i tell the difference? I was suspecting oriental fruit moth as a possibility. Is there a way to identify which for sure or just treat as broad spectrum? My apples are being affected as well, possibly by the same pest?
No, it is not the same insect affecting your apples. The dimples look like Apple Maggot. It has been a pest for many, many years. Here is information on it: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/fruit/apple-pest-management/maggot/
I did hang a few traps, apparently not enough though. I didn't realize i can make my own traps for a fraction of the price. I don't suppose there's some magical way to lure them out or kill them after they've hatched??
No, the damage is done.
