Rhus Trilobata (Skunkbush Sumac) Galls #420873

Asked August 12, 2017, 10:19 PM EDT

The sumac in my yard is infested with galls (see photos).  Any idea what pest is causing this?

I have a lot of fruit trees and a viburnum nearby.  Are any of those likely to also be susceptible to this pest?

I wouldn't miss the sumac, but there is a lot of it to remove.

Thanks!

Thanks!  Would you recommend removing the affected foliage to reduce spread of the mite to other plants and trees?

Unfortunately we can not find anything about removing the affected area to reduce the spread. Removing the affected area will produce new growth, hopefully if you proceed to remove the affected foliage you will notice new growth without any of the galls forming. Thanks for the questions. Hope all goes well.
