Honeycrisp Apple Tree disease #418912

Asked August 03, 2017, 8:40 AM EDT

We have a few HoneyCrisp Apple trees that have a disease. I have attached pictures. I can not decide if the problem is Fire Blight or Black Rot.

Expert Response

I think your young trees are showing signs of being attacked by Japanese Beetles or another caterpillar. The holes in the leaves are probably caused by the feeding. It will not kill your trees but make sure to give them TLC for the rest of the year. FYI here is a link to information about the two diseases you mentioned. You will see the symptoms are different.  http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/diagnose/plant/fruit/apple/leavesbrown.html

Thank you for your prompt response.  Upon closer inspection my apple tree leaves do show signs of insect damage from the Japanese Beatle.   From the information  obtained from the U of M Extension website there is not a lot that can be done this late in the year.  I do not see  dead or dying grass that would indicate larvae close to the trees.   Why would Japanese Beatle damage cause all the tree leaves to turn brown and die rather then just the leaves that where feasted upon?  I attached one more picture since I have four in the file.

It could be there is some anthracnose also but there is nothing that really can be done about that at this time. It is just too hard to tell from a photo with all the other damage.http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/trees-shrubs/anthracnose/
