Asked August 01, 2017, 12:59 PM EDT

Hi my wife and I have been trying to identify what is attacking our apple tress year after year. We live in Harford County, MD. We have attached a few pictures. Any help to ID the problem/insects would be so grateful!! thanks kindly . Kenny

Expert Response

If the apples are deformed without worm tunneling inside the fruit, it is likely tarnished plant bug injury: http://jenny.tfrec.wsu.edu/opm/displaySpecies.php?pn=180

If you are finding worm (larvae) tunneling in the apples, it is plum curculio, a type of beetle. Here is help: http://extension.umd.edu/growit/insects-apples-and-pears

You'll need to use a spray schedule. We have one in our tree fruit information: http://extension.umd.edu/growit/fruit-profiles/getting-started-tree-fruits
