Bacterial Leaf Spot On Peppers #418216

Asked July 31, 2017, 3:36 PM EDT

Hello Master Gardener, I belive I have identified the problem with my peppers this year as Bacterial leaf spot. I have grown peppers for years successfully and was so sad to have them fail to thrive right from the beginning of the season. I know from my own research this can be caused by infected seeds or dirt. We bought dirt for our raised beds (from a reputable landscaping company in Saint Paul) and were concerned from the start. We ended up replacing most of our peppers with new seedlings and digging out the dirt and adding new bagged compost. What a pain. Anyway, our peppers grew and made some peppers but the leaves continue to yellow and fall off and I fear they are on the way out altogether. My question for you (sorry so long winded!) is can we eat the peppers on the infected plants? We have a dozen jalapeño plants and they each have 4-5 peppers that look fine. Thank you in advance. Expert Response

The peppers that do not have corky spots should be fine. You will not get as large a crop as you would have without the disease. Sanitation is essential to prevent it happening again next year. Any tools, gloves, the sides and bottom of the bed, etc. need to be sterilized. One part bleach to ten parts water will work for tools and gloves. Here is a link on this disease. It is aimed at commercial growers but has some good practical advice: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/fruit-vegetable/plant-diseases/bacterial-spot-tomato-pepper/
