Yellow areas in my lawn #415755

Asked July 20, 2017, 8:23 PM EDT

For the last couple of years I have had yellow patches appear in my lawn. I've sprayed for insects so I'm thinking the turf is diseased or nutrient unbalanced. Is it possible to have an extension representative come help diagnose the issue?

Expert Response

It looks like your lawn has a fungal disease called Necrotic Ring Spot (NRS). Symptoms seen in your photos often become apparent in mid summer.

NRS is more commonly seen on KY Bluegrass lawns that:

-were sodded 3-10 years ago

-are growing on compacted clay soils

-are rarely/never core aerated

-receive excessive irrigation

-are mowed too short

-receive excessive nitrogen fertilizer, especially in spring

There are a few fungicides that can help to suppress NRS, but these should only be utilized in conjunction with addressing the cultural issue listed above
