colorado Blue spruce tip dying #414948

Asked July 17, 2017, 6:52 PM EDT

I have a 10 year old  15' blue spruce   in full sun in the middle of my front lawn
there are two other spruce trees the same age and size next to it and they are healthy
the one had the leader die in June. - I do not want this to recur or spread to the others
what could be causing this or what should I do at this point

Expert Response

normally seen in spruces planted at elevations above 6000', white pine weevil often damages leader new growth of spruce.   Repeated annual infestation of white pine weevil can cause disfigurement of the spruce.

If reachable, prune out the dead leader(s). While you're up there, check the dead leaders for chip cocoons created by white pine weevil.

The spruce most upright side branches may become the new leader, but new growth from that new leader is prone to injury by white pine weevil.

There are a few preventive insecticide options; read and follow label directions.
