Tulip Poplar tree and suggested replacement trees or plants? #414558

Asked July 16, 2017, 11:38 AM EDT

The accompanying photos show a damaged tulip poplar tree situated on the banks of Williamsburg Run, a tributary of Rock Creek, in Olney, MD. Estimated height of the tree is in excess of 75 feet. Post-storm runoff over the years has caused erosion of soil on the bank of the creek as well as probably initiating damage to the bark and trunk. Given these factors, can you suggest replacement trees or plants for this location which would preserve the sylvan aspect of the site, yet possibly resist the occasional scouring effects of the stream's runoff?

Some trees you may want to consider include sweet gum, black gum, and sycamore among others.
