Trying to find out what this bush is so I can find another...someone thought it was a nicotine plant, but it does not resemble that. Any help in identifying it would be greatly appreciated.

Most definitely not Nicotiana, which has very deep-throated flowers. Probably Weigela, maybe 'Sonic Bloom'.
Another Master Gardener has pointed out that it could possibly be a purple loosestrife cultivar (Lythrum salicaria). Purple loosestrife is highly invasive and it is illegal to plant it in Minnesota:
