Small ant like bugs with wings that fly/hop #413537

Asked July 11, 2017, 6:26 PM EDT

They start coming out at dusk. They come from outdoors but end up inside the house. They come in clusters. They love lights. Very slow. Easy to catch individually. When they are walking they tend to hop. What are they? How can we get rid of them? Thanks!

Expert Response

The images are not clear but they are most likely male and female ants which are on their mating flight.  They are attracted to the light so that is why you are getting them inside.
Minimize the light and leave a light on somewhere away from your house to distract them.  The mated queens will look for a place to start a new nest.  Without a clear image, it is hard to ID the species.  It is usually easier to have them in hand to look at under a microscope to key them out.
You can contact your local extension to see if they know of someone locally that can ID them if you want to know more details.
