Daylily Aphid Infestation #412422

Asked July 07, 2017, 11:24 AM EDT

HELP! My daylilies (hundreds of them) are completely infested with aphids! In addition to blasting them off with a hose (which I have attempted to do), what can I do to save my massive daylily flowerbeds? Should I get a few hundred ladybug larvae? I've seen the problem elsewhere in my neighborhood (55410). Why!? Is there a bee-friendly eco-friendly solution to this problem? Please help! Thanks!!

Expert Response

You can continue to hit your daylilies with a strong spray of water. Alternatively, you could also use horticultural soap. The soap will kill on contact but does not remain to destroy the beneficials who will be attracted to the aphids. Here is a link to information on aphids. Although it refers to trees and shrubs, the management options are the same: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/insects/find/aphids-on-deciduous-trees-and-shrubs/
