apple tree issues #412304

Asked July 06, 2017, 8:16 PM EDT

Are there any common apple tree issues in the area this year(2017)? Our tree, a semi-dwarf granny smith, put on fruit but then all but two apples fell off once they were about the size of a plum. The leaves have brown spots as well. Any suggestions to treat?

Expert Response

The loss of the fruit is most likely due to lack of pollination. That might be due to lack of bees, but it could also be related to the weather this year. As a fruit swells, if it does not have seeds, it will be dropped. It is called June drop and can be dramatic. The spots look like spray burn. This usually occurs when a tree is sprayed over 85 degrees.
