sudden death for hydrangea #411727

Asked July 04, 2017, 4:04 PM EDT

I planted a beautiful healthy hydrangea 5 yrs ago.  It thrived for 5 summers with large blue blooms.  Suddenly, last summer one branch started turning yellow and then brown.  After a few weeks the entire bush was dead.  I waited until fall to dig it up and inspect the root system suspecting a mole or something had eaten the roots.  No, nothing ill looking about the roots.  It just died.  I have never seen this. Any ideas?

Expert Response

The symptoms you describe are consistent with a fungal root rot. However, without a sample that can be examined by the UD Plant Diagnostic Clinic there is no certainty that this is the case. If you are confident that the plant was not subjected to environmental stressors such as drought, wet conditions, physical injury, excessive salt, etc. and you did not see symptoms of disease on the leaves (brown spots, misshapen, etc.) then a root problem is the most likely culprit. Information about the services of the UD Plant Diagnostic Clinic is at http://extension.udel.edu/ag/plant-diseases/ud-plant-diagnostic-clinic/
