I wouldlike to plant a hazelnut tree that could bear fruit quickly. #407859

I live in eugene and have a full sun site. I want a filbert. What type of filbert tree do you recommend? Where can I buy it? What age of tree bears nuts? My ninety two year old mother would like to be able to gather the nuts, so the sooner it produced the better. How much should I expect to pay? I have truck and can drive to pick it up. Thank you, Randy

Randy,

Many thanks for your question!  My best recommendation is to go to this website...

then start contacting the growers nearest you. Ask about the varieties they grow and whether any of them are likely to come into production sooner. Also, ask about the age and size of their nursery stock, as a 1-year-old "whip" (basically just a small trunk sticking up out of the ground) will take longer to produce than an older/larger tree. Generally speaking, trees begin producing in year 4, although they might put on a small crop in year 3 or even in year 2.

Hazelnuts need a pollinizer, and they are pollinated by wind.  Therefore, for whatever variety you get, you'll need a pollinizer.  The various nurseries will have pollinizers for the varieties they sell.  Generally speaking, our wind patterns are predominantly from the south during the time of pollination (winter), so if you can, plant the pollinizer to the south of the other tree unless you know wind at your particular site usually comes from a different direction in the winter.

I don't have any specific suggestions for a variety particularly well suited to your needs.  I can say that "Jefferson" has an upright growth habit that may be easier to manage than some others.  "Yamhill" tends to droop down, which may be a hassle if you want to be able to walk/mow around the tree.

OSU Extension has many publications that you may find useful...
