Asked June 15, 2017, 10:19 AM EDT

Found in numerous places in our garden. Is it poisonous? Would like some additional info. Understand that it is rare.

Expert Response

Hi,   This fun plant in the photos is called Pterospora andromedea, or Pinedrops.  It is a parasitic plant that feeds off the roots of pine trees.  Not that uncommon in central oregon and other western states. I have never heard it referred to as wild red asparagus, it is not related to asparagus and it is not edible to my knowledge.  More info here:  https://plants.usda.gov/core/profile?symbol=ptan2

Thanks,
