Are these termites? #405996

Asked June 10, 2017, 10:16 AM EDT

These black insects/bugs are about 3/8 inch long. They are on the outside of our vinyl siding and treated wood deck on Torch Lake in Antrium County. A few get into the house. There are several hundred crawling and flying around. We think we have seen them in other years in the spring.

Expert Response

The insect in your pictures is an adult stonefly.  The immatures are aquatic, usually living among rocks and debris on the bottom of streams.  The adults are sometimes attracted to lights at night.

Thank you Erwin. I did a little more reading on the stonefly and learned that I need not do anything to get rid of them. They will disappear in a couple of weeks. Is that correct? Rosalyn

Right, they are usually a temporary thing.
