Carpet Beetles on Goatsbeard Plant: harm Plant or risk getting into my house? #404320

Asked June 03, 2017, 8:26 AM EDT

Hello,  I have carpet beetles all over my Goatsbeard Plant.  Will this harm the plant?  More importantly will I be at risk for me or my pet bringing them inside my house?  Should I get rid of the plant or do something to get rid of the beetles on my plant?  What predatory insects eat them?

Expert Response

Hello,
Thank you for using Ask an Expert.  I would advise you to keep your Goatsbeard plant outside to  save yourself a lot of cleaning.  Carpet beetles feed on a wide variety of stored food and dry food materials.  Others feed upon items of animal origin such as hair, fur and leather.

Once carpet beetles find their way into your home and cupboards it is a nightmare to clean and reorganize your household.

You could try spraying the plant with insecticidal soap to get rid of the carpet beetles, but it still would not bring it in the house.

I hope this information is helpful and Good Luck!

Hello,  Thank you for your response but I realized now I was not clear in my question.  I would not bring the plant inside.  What I meant to ask was should I keep the plant at all.  I am worried if I keep the plant my dog will walk along side of it, risking bringing the bugs inside.  Thank you,

Hello again,
I would first try insecticidal soap and if that doesn't take care of the carpet beetles
I would get rid of the plant.  If the Goats beard has carpet beetles it won't be long before they spread into other areas.  I would put the plant in a plastic bag and destroy it so the little critters can't escape onto other areas.

I hope this helps.  Thanks again for using Ask an Expert.
