What sort of flying beetle is this? #403377

Asked May 30, 2017, 2:19 PM EDT

This looks a bit like a beetle. What is it? If I see it again, should I kill it?

Prince George's County Maryland

Expert Response

This is a cool insect called a fishfly (Nigronia fasciatus). Like the large Dobsonfly, they spend the larval stage of their life in flowing waters.
They are considered beneficial, so don't kill them.
They are attracted to lights at night, so maybe that is why you saw him.
